Awaiting Spring
While driving through Grafton, Vermont on a dreary March day back in the seventies, I came across a barn with snow melting from a half rusted roof. The barn had a lot of character. Not knowing what kind of photo was going to happen, I decided to bracket several shots and came up with a photo worth painting.
Typically, I have a collection of photographs waiting to be painted. However, with this photograph, I decided to get started right away. As with all paintings, I print and hang a photograph next to my easel for reference. I then begin to roughly sketch out the scene on canvas and determine a set of colors to work with. In the end, Awaiting Spring became my signature painting.
